HIGHJACKING GUIDE
SOME HISTORY
Highjacking is not a new or unique problem to South Africa. The first Highjacking was recorded in 1984.
Every 32 minutes, a motorist is highjacked somewhere in South Africa, Highjackings reported for the period 2019/2020 – Gauteng: 9025, compared to 7776 the previous financial year. An average of 24 highjackings per day.
Highjacking is also not only a problem just associated with industrial areas; but rather a problem associated with the availability of a certain vehicle.
In 90 % of these cases the highjackers were armed, although only 1% of attacks involved a fatal shooting. This means that the better prepared a potential victim is, the greater probability of the person surviving the attack with limited physical injury.
